On 12th January, our school held a Cantonese and Mandarin Historical Lecture in the School Hall. This lecture, co-organised with the University of Macao, aimed to introduce the historical development of Cantonese and Mandarin to our JM1 students. It covered Cantonese in the mid-Qing dynasty, Beijing dialect in the Yuan dynasty, and Xi'an dialect in the Tang dynasty. The speaker Mr Lo In Fat is an assistant professor in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at the University of Macao. Since 2018, Professor Lo has been teaching at the University of Macau and has been devoted to promoting Chinese phonetics and the historical phonetics of dialects in China.
Professor Lo provided a detailed introduction to the nine tones in present-day Cantonese and discussed the gradual reduction of tones in Cantonese, as well as possible coping strategies.
During the lecture, students engaged in conversations and interactions with the speaker, which greatly benefited them and enhanced their interest in the development of Cantonese and Mandarin.
