The Academic Year 2023-2024 Opening Mass at Yuet Wah Catholic School took place on September 15, 2023. The Mass was divided into two sessions, one for the junior section and another for the senior, officiated by Father Ho Ka Fai and Father Yu Fu Keung, respectively. Principal Father Chow Pak Fai assisted in the senior section Mass.
During the homily, Father Ho Ka Fai mentioned that it was the commemoration of Our Lady of Sorrows. Mary has always stood by Jesus' side at the cross, which is a symbol of hope and God's love. Father Ho also shared the inspiring story of Sister Mary Glowrey, the first nun doctor who served in India. He encouraged the students to take her as an example, to dream and dare to dream, and to strive for their dreams. Father Ho reminded everyone that embracing missions and dreams will inevitably encounter difficulties. He suggested that the students spend time sitting in the church, as Jesus and Mary will bestow strength upon them.
At the beginning of his sermon, Father Yu Fu Keung asked the students to take two minutes to reflect: "Who will cause you the most pain this year? And who will you cause pain to? Is it someone you interact with daily? Is it at school, at home, or on the internet?" Our Lady of Sorrows teaches us to learn from her, to accept pain, and to silently contemplate it. As Mary learnt to accept pain, she was not troubled by it. The only way to break the cycle of pain is through learning to accept it. Father Yu further reminded the students to reflect on the meaning of this year's theme whenever they see the annual theme poster: "Unfold talents with decency. Serve others with sincerity." This means going beyond oneself and valuing opportunities to assist others. Finally, Father Yu encouraged everyone by saying, "To surpass yourself, begin today."
