Our school held a Reading and Writing Seminar in the School Hall on 25th January, with SM1C and SM1D students in attendance. The seminar was co-organised by the Macau Foundation and the Macau Daily News as an extension activity of the Macau Secondary School Students' Reading Reflection Essay Competition. Its objective was to promote continuous reading culture round the campus and help students develop a love for reading and writing. The guest speaker for the seminar was Mr. Tam Kin Chao, a physician at Kiang Wu Hospital. Mr. Tam is a member of the Macau Writers' Association, Executive Director of the Macau Chinese Culture Development Promotion Association, and a columnist for the Macau Daily News. His works have been published in various media outlets in Macau, receiving numerous literary awards in Macau and other regions. Some of his notable works include Days and Nights of Furnace Pond, Dragon on the Sickbed, Uncovered Fatal Secrets and so on.
During his presentation on his writing experiences, the speaker also touched upon the history and culture of Macau, deepening the students' understanding of Macau literature. In terms of writing, Mr. Tam Kin Chao mentioned the cultural characteristics of Macau, emphasising that we can find different themes for our creative works in our daily lives, such as food, architecture, and the local atmosphere, which can be expressed through articles and stories. Mr. Tam Kin Kau also recommended works by renowned authors, such as Yu Dafu, Feng Zikai, and Kafka, whose works are worth reading for secondary school students. Lastly, Mr. Tam Kin Kau encouraged young students to read more, be receptive to experiences, and find inspiration in their everyday life. He emphasised the importance of bringing reality and fiction together in literature, incorporating personal interests into writing, elevating thoughts, and broadening horizons. These are all valuable lessons that secondary school students can learn from.
During the seminar, the students had the opportunity to engage in interactive discussions with the speaker, which proved to be highly beneficial for them and helped foster their interest in reading and writing.
