The Chinese Month activities have recently concluded successfully, and we wish to express our sincere gratitude to all students for their enthusiastic participation. This year's Chinese Month encompassed a diverse array of events, including traditional activities such as poster exhibitions, writing competitions, and calligraphy contests, as well as four workshops dedicated to the preservation of Chinese cultural traditions.
Additionally, the third Inter-Class Debate Competition took place on January 3 at the Jubilee Complex Hall, featuring twelve teams from F2 to F3 and JM2 to SM1, all of whom qualified to compete. Participants engaged in rigorous debates on twelve distinct topics, culminating in an exciting showdown between the finalists.
On the day of the competition, students demonstrated their eloquence as they debated the topics "The use of both traditional and simplified Chinese characters is more beneficial than detrimental to Macau's basic education" and "The implementation of a four-day workweek is more advantageous than disadvantageous for societal development."
Furthermore, the department has been steadfast in its commitment to organising activities that promote the appreciation of Chinese culture. Professional instructors were invited to impart knowledge of calligraphy and tea culture to the students. Ms. Chau Hon Va, a distinguished calligrapher, conducted two workshops on calligraphy, during which students joyfully inscribed phrases such as "Welcoming Spring with the Golden Snake," thereby upholding the esteemed traditions of Chinese culture.
Through Mr. Kuok's detailed explanations of the distinctions among green tea, yellow tea, white tea, oolong tea, black tea, pu-erh tea, and ancient tree tea, students gained a deeper understanding of tea culture. The instructor also demonstrated the art of brewing tea, allowing students to experience the pleasure of tasting various types and to feel the warmth that winter brings. These workshops provided invaluable insights into the artistry of calligraphy and the nuances of tea culture, fostering a profound commitment to the preservation of Chinese heritage.
The activities organised by the Chinese department were both diverse and engaging, with the aim of cultivating students' appreciation for Chinese culture. We eagerly anticipate welcoming you again next year!
